Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker competitor in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching the age of one. His grandfather taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup every little thing he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse comments from other people kill his goal of becoming one of the best poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching period and winning was not a regular outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He says that he is learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his success. He admits to making errors in each session of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
