Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to make it to the last table in three of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a massive pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest gamblers around the world. While gambling on internet poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. He frequently participates in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus generally buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then goes all in. I accept that Hansen is an excellent poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has absolutely no reason to sit at the table with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the minimum takes most of the expertise out of big stack poker. Gus is supposed to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full dollar value. I believe television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best poker players in the world could be players you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be seen playing web poker on Full Tilt. He usually competes in high stakes omaha hold’em and Holdem. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he use his skills in money rounds?
