Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
