Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi low starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low provides an exciting assortment of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have many players shooting for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
