Omaha Hi-Low: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low offers an exciting collection of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with many shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/lo.
