Internet High Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only player to achieve last game in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is considered to be one of the strongest gamblers around the world. While playing web poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. He often participates in the 200/400 No Limit max buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen generally buys-in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then goes all in. I know Hansen is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the table with the minimum buy-in.

Buying in for the min takes a majority of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the total dollar value. I think television can skew our perception of the real world at times. The greatest players in the world might just be guys you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be found betting on internet poker on Full Tilt. He normally competes in big stakes omaha eight-or-better and Holdem. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his talents in cash games?
